Dear person who typed these words into Google and got to my blog:
serious help for people who clutter books dont help
I can hear the pain in those words, and my heart goes out to you...
What can you do right away to feel some relief when the books don't help? Here are some concrete ideas to help you get started:
- Be Gentle with yourself. Take the pressure off your burdened heart by realizing that you want to make the change, and the desire is the hard part to muster! Now it's just a matter of strategy. That's the easy part! We all have gifts, not everyone is born knowing how to organize or let go. I wouldn't THINK of keeping my own accounting books. Without my bookkeeper, I would be a shadow of myself. I know there is a lot of shame around being a chronic clutterer, but the shame is part of the dis-order! It's mental clutter and that is the most debilitating kind, and the hardest to tackle.
- Reach out of your isolation. There is no way to conquer clutter on your own! Find a non-judgmental friend or neighbor and ask them for help. They don't even have to do the work with or for you, they can just sit there for a few hours a week and watch you declutter. Judith Kohlberg calls this 'body doubling', the idea that having a warm body next to you to anchor you can really help with focus. Read this helpful article on Body Doubling.
- Start Small: Flylady says,
"you can do anything for 15 minutes". Pick a small defined area, like a junk drawer, empty it out, clean it out, set a new intention for the drawer and only put stuff back that you need, want or love. For many people, this is the hard part. Try naming each item "friend or foe", and make your decisions that way. Foes can leave, friends get to stay. That drawer or shelf can then be the fulcrum of harmony that will ripple out into the rest of your life. I have seen it happen, it can happen to you, to, I promise.
It can be that simple! Toss away the clutter books, (that's why I haven't written one yet!) toss away the voices in your head that hold you back, see this as a joyful process that cannot be done alone. Maybe this obstacle is your heart's way of prompting you to reach out and connect with others more deeply?
I also have another secret weapon: there is an essential oil by the company called Young Living. The oil is called
Valor. I have already watched several people's lives change in a few weeks, subtly but powerfully, using this oil alone.
